An Introduction to School of Languages and Literature
The School of Languages and Literature was founded in April 2011, descending from School of Foreign Languages and School of Humanities. There are three majors for undergraduate, including English Language and Literature, Korean and Chinese Language and Literature. The School comprises Department of English, Department of Korean, Department of Chinese, the First Division of College English Teaching, the Second Division of College English Teaching, and Language Experiment Center..
The School of Languages and Literature has 69 staff. Among them, there are 55 full-time teachers, including 3 professors, 16 associate professors, 5 adjunct professors, 10 foreign teachers and 1 master’s supervisor, among whom teachers with doctor’s degrees and master’s degrees account for over 80%. In the recent three years, the School has undertaken research subjects sponsored by National Social Science Foundation of China and Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Heilongjiang Education Department, and some research projects of Trans-century Teaching Reform in Heilongjiang. It has received more than 10 awards from the Ministry of Education, Shandong provincial Department of Education, Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education and the Association of Higher Education in Heilongjiang. During this period, the teachers have published some textbooks, books, dictionaries and hundreds of papers. Besides, they have successfully held eight academic symposiums.
Currently, the full-time enrolled students in the school amount to nearly one thousand. They have won good places in “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking Contests, “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition and Korean Public Speaking Contests in Shandong Province.
The School has perfect facilities, including 6 modern language labs, 8 multimedia classrooms, one self-learning center, and two libraries with more than 10,000 books, 108 kinds of academic journals and newspapers and 3000 audiovisual materials. It has also installed two radios and one satellite ground receiving system for students to listen to English and Korean programs from foreign countries.
Department of English
Introduction
The Department of English aims to improve students’ language skills. It also aims to develop their profound knowledge of the political, economic, and cultural aspects of major English-speaking countries. Students are required to be proficient in inter-cultural communication and computer application.
The Department of English focuses on two fields:
Language and Literature
Business English
Language and Literature requires students to
study the fundamental theories of language and literature
develop a deeper understanding of English language and literature by improving students’ language appreciation and application so as to provide a solid foundation for further study and research.
Business English requires students to grasp the basic knowledge of foreign trade and business negotiation with the emphasis on practical application.
Graduates will be awarded B.A (Bachelor of Arts) in English language after gaining credits for the regulated courses and practice and completing theses based on original research.
In order to optimize their knowledge structure, students also take another major. They are encouraged to
read extensively and attend lectures and seminars in the field covered by the second major to develop their knowledge of the subject.

Department of Korean
Introduction
The Department of Korean aims at cultivating students to be qualified in skills of communication, translation, systematic understanding of Korean political and economic cultures. Students are required to be proficient in bilingual business communication and computer application.
The Department of Korean implements the 2+1+1 model of teaching, that is, students study in HIT (Weihai) during the first two years with the third year in South Korea and then return to HIT for the final year for graduation.

Introduction
The Department of Chinese aims at raising students’ literary attainments, improving their ability of language skills in Chinese and developing knowledge in foreign literature and cultures. The characteristic of the Department is to provide professional training on traditional Chinese language and literature. Besides, it enhances students’ ability of communication with foreign languages and ability of TCFL (teaching of Chinese as a foreign language) by pointed courses and practical activities.

The First Division of College English Teaching
The First Division of College English Teaching has regarded “unity, cooperation, forging ahead and common progress” as its goals, and has been awarded the title of college-level “Leading Women Group” twice.
The First Division of College English Teaching has 14 members in total, including 4 associate professors and 10 lecturers. The teachers help each other and make progress together encouraged by the spirit of “more experienced teachers assisting less experienced”. They have not only accomplished their teaching tasks, but also taken an active part in other activities, for example, teaching research and publishing papers.
At the same time, the Division has also successfully held a great number of extracurricular activities such as “CCTV Cup” National English Speech Contest, National English Contest for College Students, orientation lectures for freshmen and other activities to promote students’ English learning outside the classroom. With these activities, students are encouraged to use English in their daily life and to foster interest in English.
Teachers in the Division also take an important role in all kinds of other activities, such as academic seminars in HIT and sports meetings etc.
Although much has been achieved, all teachers know that success only belongs to the past, and they should continue to work hard, as always!

The Second Division of College English Teaching
Faculty and Staff
The Second Division of College English Teaching is a well-organized team of teachers. Its aim is to develop a rigorous teaching style, creative spirit in research, and a good team atmosphere.
The Second Division of College English Teaching has 12 teachers, including 2associate professors and 10 lecturers. The group has been awarded the title of “Advanced Party Branch of HIT” twice in 2005 and 2007. In addition, the Division was also awarded the “Leading Women Group”, the province-level title of “Advanced Party Branch in College” in Shandong, “Outstanding Teacher Award”, “Teaching Excellence Award”, “Outstanding Head Teacher Award”, “Advanced Individuals Award” and “Outstanding Party Member Award”.
Teaching and Research
In terms of teaching and research achievements, the Division is also in a leading position. Within the guideline of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, this group first implemented the College English teaching by A-level and B-level in 2003, receiving notable achievements with over 90% passing rate in CET4 by the A-level students in their third semester. In 2005, the network-based multimedia teaching reform was undertaken to heighten students’ confidence, stimulate their enthusiasm for English learning, and enhance students’ abilities in English self-learning and practical application. In 2007, a pilot experiment of the practical English teaching reform was done to foster students’ abilities to use the language freely by training the students’ language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. All of these creative teaching reforms have contributed a lot to the teachers’ professional skills.
Over the past years, English teachers in this group have published many academic papers and been involved in 6 teaching and research projects. In particular, all the members have participated in the publishing of “College Practical English series courses”, and won many awards either at college or provincial level.
Students' Activities
To build a multi-dimensional model of college English teaching, and to enrich students’ cultural lives after class, this group has organized extra-curriculum activities. Two examples are the English Speech Contest and English Song Competition.
It has also held successfully the “CCTV Cup” National English Speech Contest, National English Contest for College Students with many teachers being the recipients of the “National Contest Organization Award” and “Outstanding Teacher.” All of these colorful extracurricular activities have enhanced students’ interest in English learning and promoted campus cultures.

Language Experiment Center
The Language Experiment Center is made up of four language laboratories, one oral English test laboratory, one digital language laboratory, one self-learning center, eight multimedia classrooms, two English broadcasting stations and one library.
The Language Experiment Center provides a service for daily teaching, academic internships, graduation projects, examinations and spoken English training.
The language laboratories are used for listening, speaking and audio-visual classes. Oral English classes, test of TEM-4 and TEM-8 are carried out in oral English test laboratory. The digital language laboratory and the self-learning center are used for on-line surfing and graduation projects. Multimedia classrooms are used for daily teaching, including intensive reading, extensive reading and business English.
The library has over 10,000 books and approximately 3,000 CD-ROMS or tapes. The English broadcasting stations are available for four hours each day, providing news, films and other programs in English. A range of printed journals, electronic journals and newspapers are available for all the students.
